United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT)

In early August 1995, the military campaign Operation Storm led to the exodus and deaths of Serb civilians from the Krajina region in Croatia, and the destruction of their property. Representatives of the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities #MIP and the Office of the Prosecutor #OTP of the #Mechanism delivered presentations today at the 18th International Summer School Sarajevo 2024, organised by the Association “Pravnik” and KAS Rule of Law Programme South East Europe

The IRMCT remembers the victims of the Llapushnik/Lapušnik prison camp, run by the Kosovo Liberation Army in the summer of 1998. For crimes committed against prisoners of the camp, the ICTY sentenced former KLA soldier Haradin Bala to 13 years’ imprisonment. Today, the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities participated in a workshop for Croatian history teachers organised by SENSE Transitional Centre and the Association of Croatian History Teachers (HUNP) in Pula, Croatia. The workshop aimed to assist teachers in using the judicial archive of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals. More specifically, it focused on utilising narratives produced by SENSE as a tool in teaching the history of the 1990s conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. #IRMCT #ICTY #MIP

Today, the President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, Judge Graciela Gatti Santana, was honoured to participate in the Twenty-Ninth Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide, held in Potočari, Bosnia and Herzegovina. #RememberSrebrenicaGenocide

During and after the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide, women were exposed to great suffering, both as direct victims of crimes and by losing their loved ones. #IRMCT recognises their immense courage and pays tribute to the women victims of the #SrebrenicaGenocide. #RememberSrebrenicaGenocide

Many Srebrenica Genocide survivors testified before the #ICTY about the mass killings that took place in July 1995 after the fall of Srebrenica. #IRMCT pays tribute to all Srebrenica survivors and recalls some of their testimonies. #RememberSrebrenicaGenocide

July 2024 marks 29 years since the #SrebrenicaGenocide. In commemoration, the #IRMCT pays tribute to the victims and survivors of that terrible time and remembers all those who have suffered. In its online exhibition ‘Srebrenica: Timeline of a Genocide’, the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities guides visitors through the events that took place in Srebrenica in July 1995. The exhibition explains how the genocide was planned and carried out, as told by survivors as well as insiders from the Bosnian Serb Army. #RememberSrebrenicaGenocide
