Earlier this month Valley was featured in season 3, episode 1 of the Smithsonian Channel's How Did They Build That? With cameos from our own Winy Maas and Gideon Maasland, the episode covers the building's complex structural engineering, the challenge of designing the façade, and the difficulties of building such a structure in waterlogged Amsterdam. Our interior design of the new Sotheby's Maison in Hong Kong creates one of the world’s most public art and cultural hubs!   We designed a new location for one of the world’s leading auction houses, transforming a busy section of the Landmark Chater, a luxury retail destination in Hong Kong. The interior design is influenced by the Taoist principles of dichotomy and dynamic change.   The Maison hosts two distinct atmospheres. The light and open upper level serves as a gallery space, welcoming the public to peruse artworks and luxury items in a retail experience curated by Sotheby’s. We’re delighted to welcome our new Head of Urban Anna Gasco to the practice! Anna will be overseeing MVRDV’s urban planning projects and development strategies in the Netherlands and globally. She is also Head of Urbanism at the Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam, where she leads the chair and develops the educational curriculum. She brings a wealth of international knowledge adding to the vibrancy of our office! Anna’s latest book, “The Airport as Urban Territory”, investigates the spatial effects of Singapore’s Changi Airport. What was the vision behind our design for the NIO House Amsterdam? FRAME visited the flagship store of this electric car manufacturer in the heart of the Dutch capital to find out! NIO House Amsterdam occupies a seven-storey building on Amsterdam’s Keizersgracht, originally built in the late 19th century. Our design renovated the building, combining design elements reflective of NIO’s brand with a respectful treatment of the historic building. NIO House Amsterdam is not just a typical car showroom, but a public building and community that contributes to the neighbourhood, with a café and spaces for co-working, events, and exhibitions. The building’s seven floors now form a colour gradient inspired by NIO’s “blue sky coming” slogan, from earthy colours on the lower floors to an airy blue on the top floor. The formerly closed-off rooftop pavilion designed by Gerrit Rietveld was opened again, offering panoramic views over the roofs of Amsterdam! What’s it like to work globally on business development for architecture and urbanism? As we each individually enjoy our summer vacation, more and more places across the globe are experiencing the negative effects of so-called “over-tourism”. In popular destinations such as Barcelona and Mallorca, locals are marching to protest a drop in wages, loss of quality of life, and an increase in the price of housing that they blame on the high number of tourists coming to their hometowns. Meanwhile, the city of Venice has cut the size of tourist parties to a maximum of 25, and in April they became the world's first city to implement a payment system for visitors, in an effort to discourage day-trippers from coming during peak moments. How much tourism is too much tourism? Does leisure have its limits? That’s the question The Why Factory tried to answer in their book “Absolute Leisure”. The publication catalogues the extent to which leisure is designed. It sizes up the infrastructure of everyday leisure in terms of space, time, and money. The book questions if a world of absolute leisure really is fun. Is it paradise or does it turn into a living hell? What might a world built entirely of leisure look like? “Absolute Leisure” demonstrates the size of the footprint that our leisure activities have left behind on our landscapes, cities, and architecture. But that is not all: the architectural and urban projects presented here problematise the leisure activities of today and outline the possibility of a new solution. The only way is up! Our projects Shenzhen Women & Children’s Centre and Valley have been nominated for the International High-Rise Award, organised by the Stadt Frankfurt am Main, Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), and DekaBank Deutsche Girozentrale! The Shenzhen Women & Children’s Centre transforms an old mixed-use tower into a vibrant and colourful skyscraper hosting a hotel and a wide range of facilities for the welfare of women and children. The building sets an important precedent for repurposing buildings in a city that is soon to see a “great wave of adaptive reuse”. Valley stands out in Amsterdam’s Zuidas neighbourhood with its three towers of 67, 81, and 100 metres and its spectacular cantilevered apartments. The building distinguishes itself in several ways: firstly, it combines offices, shops, catering, cultural facilities, and apartments in one building; secondly, unlike the closed-off buildings elsewhere in the Zuidas, the green valley that winds between the towers on the fourth and fifth floors is accessible to everyone via two external stone staircases.
