This milestone marks a significant step forward in the advancement of offshore wind technology, particularly for areas with deep waters where traditional fixed turbines aren’t viable. This research lease, awarded by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), covers an area of 9,700 acres and will allow the University of Maine to explore innovative floating wind technologies. The project aims to harness the potential of winds that could generate up to 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity—enough to power over 1 million homes. As the U.S. aims to reach 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, Maine's initiative could be a game-changer.
