🏊♀️ 🏊♀️ During the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the Seine River is in the spotlight. Not for its beauty, but for its dirty water.   Dirty river water isn't just a Parisian problem; it's a universal challenge faced by cities worldwide: the challenge of managing stormwater and combined sewage overflows.   Many older city sewer systems are combined, meaning they collect both sanitary- and stormwater flows. During heavy rain, when water treatment systems can’t handle the increased volume of water, excess stormwater and untreated wastewater are discharged directly into the city's waterways.   Combine the above with aging infrastructure and unpredictable weather patterns, and you have yourself a perfect storm. In densely populated areas, these problems can pose serious public health threats. The EPA estimates that $630 billion is needed until 2030 to improve stormwater and wastewater infrastructure in the US alone.   As the world tunes in to watch the 2024 Olympics, the attention for the Seine River serves as a powerful reminder that water quality cannot be taken for granted, also not in developed countries. Great to see that South East Laboratories Ltd will start using the revolutionary MICA solution, developed by our portfolio company, Diamidex. With this technology, they will become pioneers in Legionella detection in the UK. Great to see that Microsoft and our portfolio company VAPAR are working together to improve the health of our collection systems! VAPAR's cloud-based platform uses AI to detect defects in sewer and stormwater pipes from CCTV inspections, enabling more efficient infrastructure maintenance and reducing the amount of water that leaks into, and out of, these collection systems. In the attached article, Microsoft details the upcoming partnership with VAPAR, offering their software on Azure Marketplace. This collaboration will further accelerate VAPAR's efforts in rolling out their offering in the US. During the first edition of our PureTerra Water Day, the value and pricing of water were prominent topics of discussion. A recent Global Water Intelligence (GWI) article once more underlined that, even in the Netherlands, a country that is for many renowned for its water management, we are facing critical challenges in our water supply. Water supply companies Vitens, Dunea, and WBGr are already experiencing supply concerns, with all companies expected to face shortages by 2030. Significant investment is needed to tackle water supply problems as well as handling emerging contaminants, with Vitens alone projecting a rise from €100 million (2024) to €600 million (2033) in annual investments to secure their water supply. This highlights the urgency for innovative solutions that enhance water treatment efficiency and address the challenges posed by emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and PFAS. At PureTerra Ventures, we are optimistic. We see numerous companies and technologies that can drive this much needed transition to a sustainable water system, and are here to accelerate these companies. EIF 30 years (b)old, with more than 2.1 million SMEs supported by the European Investment Fund (EIF). What a big milestone!   PureTerra Ventures - the first water-focused fund backed by the EIF - joined the anniversary celebration of the EIF in Luxembourg this week. It was great to meet the network of the EIF and awesome to hear that the importance of water was mentioned so explicitly during the keynote speech of Dr Jan-Gisbert Schultze.   Thank you Anna Finizio and Marjut Falkstedt for the invitation!

Cruise ships are like cities, dealing with similar questions of sustainability and circularity but then compressed to as little as 500m2, which require innovative solutions. An industry challenged for its footprint may proof to be exemplary for efficient, low emission decentralised wastewater treatment in communities.
