Over 40 years of direct-action campaigns to defend, conserve and protect our oceans and marine wildlife.

Over ons

First established in 1977, Sea Shepherd is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organisation. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations. Created in 2012, Sea Shepherd Global is an independent entity from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in the US, and operates as the umbrella organization for independent Sea Shepherd groups throughout the world which continue anti-whaling campaigns in the Southern Ocean.

For the past few months, our dedicated volunteers have been on the ground, working to document crucial evidence to expose the brutal practice that slaughters more than 1,000 pilot whales each year in the #FaroesIslands. Ending the #Grind is a marathon, not a sprint. Our work is not a war against the Faroese people but a call for those who share our compassion to speak out and urge decision-makers to take action. With your support, we have a chance to create a future where our oceans are free from bloodshed and full of life. Here’s how you can make an impact right now: - Raise Awareness: Share our latest updates and spread the word about the Grind’s cruelty. - Pressure Decision-Makers: Contact your local or European reps and push them to support the Stop The Grind coalition. - Make Informed Choices: Ask businesses if they sell Faroese fish and let them know your stance. You probably already know that our crew is on the ground, documenting to help end the cruel slaughter of pilot whales and dolphins in the #FaroeIslands. But on days when there’s no grind, we’re still hard at work in other ways. Today, that means rolling up our sleeves and cleaning these beautiful beaches—part of our commitment to leaving the islands better than we found them. By living plant-based, connecting with locals, and doing what we can to make an impact, we’re showing that every action counts when it comes to protecting our oceans and the incredible creatures that call them home. 🌱🤝 Join us in the fight to #StopTheGrind and learn more about our efforts here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/evdFhGKE Do you do beach cleanups? The Faroese Grindadráp is crueler than they admit❗👉 New research shows that, despite official claims, the so-called "instantaneous" killing method leaves whales paralyzed but conscious, enduring prolonged suffering. It’s time to face the truth behind this brutal practice. From ocean killers to lifesavers 🌊💪 Our crew aboard the #SeaEagle just dismantled a deadly ghost net—one of 640,000 tons of abandoned fishing gear lurking in our oceans. But this isn’t just about cleanup. Thanks to our partnership with iMilani, these once-dangerous traps are reborn as Sea Turtle Crates, vital tools in rescuing injured marine life. Every piece of plastic we recover gets a second life, saving the very creatures it once endangered. Want to know how we're turning threats into hope❓Read the full story here. https://lnkd.in/dWn6f-5E 📸 Claire Foster / Sea Shepherd #GhostNet #SeaShepherd

Ever wondered what happens to the illegal fishing gear we pull from the #Mediterranean Sea? Instead of just removing it; we’re giving it a new lease on life! With help from iMilani, we’re recycling ghost gear into Sea Turtle Crates—each made from 8.6 kg of marine debris. These crates are then used to safely transport injured #seaturtles on our ships and those of our Coast Guard partners. 🐢 From ocean waste to turtle rescue, it all comes full circle. Have you ever seen a ghost net on a beach or in the ocean? If so, where? 🎥 Max Ludolf / Sea Shepherd #seashepherd #marineconservation

👉 The ocean is filled with abandoned fishing gear—millions of traps, hooks, and nets—that continue to claim marine life long after they’ve been discarded. While some of this ghost gear washes up on shores or is recovered by dedicated teams like ours, the vast majority stays hidden beneath the waves, silently killing for years. We’re on the frontlines, battling this threat to marine wildlife every day but together, we can do even more. Here’s how you can help us make a bigger impact: 👇 • Refuse to support the fishing industry—avoid “seafood” products. • Support our mission to clear the oceans by donating today: https://seashe.ph/donate #ghostgear #pollution #seashepherd

#BTS - Our work to free #octopuses and other marine life from deadly traps starts long before we hit the water. It all begins with meticulous planning, where everyone on board must be familiar with map plotting. Captain Stan leads the way as our Sea Eagle crew carefully plots coordinates, marking each point on our virtual map. It’s all about teamwork, precision, and dedication. What’s one thing you’ve always wondered about our octopus trap removal operations that we haven’t covered yet? #GoodNews from the Med Sea! Our hard-working crew, in collaboration with local authorities, has removed an incredible 3 tonnes of hazardous octopus traps from the seabed! 🐙 #ICYMI - #Octopuses often seek shelter in these traps and won't escape even when the pots are hauled up. But these traps don’t just threaten octopuses—they also endanger whales, sharks, and other marine life that often get entangled in the long lines of the traps, not to mention the vulnerable #MonkSeal, whose primary food source is the overfished octopus. 🔴 As demand for octopuses increases, so do the dangers for these amazing creatures. ➡️ That’s why we return each year to the world’s most overfished sea to clear as many traps as we can and protect marine life. Your support makes this vital work possible—let’s celebrate the difference we’re making together! 🎥 Max Ludolf / Sea Shepherd #seashepherd #marineconservation #mediterranean

⚠️ Fish don’t naturally produce #Omega3s—they obtain them from consuming algae. Here’s how it works:👇 Phytoplankton, a type of algae rich in Omega-3s, absorb sunlight to grow. Small fish eat these phytoplankton, and larger fish consume these smaller fish, transferring Omega-3s up the food chain. Plundering large numbers of fish for Omega-3 supplements disrupts this essential process. Today, nearly 90% of global fish populations are overexploited or depleted, straining marine ecosystems. A prime example is krill 👉 These tiny crustaceans feed on phytoplankton and serve as a crucial food source for whales, penguins, and seals. They also play a key role in capturing CO2, which helps mitigate climate change. However, overfishing krill for supplements has already led to a decline in humpback whale pregnancies and threatens the Antarctic ecosystem. Choosing algal-based Omega-3 supplements not only helps protect marine life but also helps you avoid harmful toxins found in fish. Make a difference—opt for algal-based Omega-3s for a healthier you and a healthier ocean! 🌍 🙌 Help us track the impact of krill overfishing. Take photos of krill-based products at your local shops and submit them here: https://lnkd.in/dhAJbKGC Together we can #stoptheplunder ! #seashepherd #marineconservation

Teamwork in action! Our Sea Eagle crew, together with the Italian Coast Guard, retrieved❗500m❗of illegal gillnets from the deep waters of Pianosa, Italy. They released a live skate, countless lobsters, and 86 urchins back to their ocean home.  #FYI, gillnets are massive walls of netting that drift or are anchored in the water, designed so that fish get stuck around their gills when they try to swim through. This often results in bycatch, where non-target species like #dolphins, #turtles, and other marine life get trapped as well. Can you guess how long these nets can stretch? A) The length of a school bus B) The length of 100 football fields Drop your guess below! 👇 📸 Claire Foster / Sea Shepherd #seashepherd #marineconservation #fortheocean
