  • Following attacks in the city of Solingen last month, in which the suspects were asylum seekers and the recent win of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in regional elections in Eastern Germany, the German government decided to tighten controls at all of its land borders, including the border with the Netherlands. What is the effectiveness of border control? Martin Unfried, senior researcher at ITEM/Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross-border cooperation and Mobility says that “Our research during the COVID pandemic shows that border controls are not effective. Just as it is disproportional and not effective to fight terrorism” #WorkingonEurope

On the border street connecting Dutch Kerkrade and German Herzogenrath, Eline-Madeleine Schmeets, PhD researcher at Studio Europa Maastricht, explores the deeper, often overlooked aspects of cross-border cooperation beyond the usual European Symbolpolitik. After the fall of Europe’s last great wall, Neustraße/Nieuwstraat—spanning two kilometers between Kerkrade and Herzogenrath—was reopened in 1995 as a "shared" European street, embodying the spirit of collaboration and European integration. Schmeets mentions how Dutch media is always quick to gather soundbites when there’s a European election or a football match between the two countries, “but by focusing on the line on the map, we forget the mundane pragmatic reality of coexistence and collaboration on the ground.” Photography: Philip Driessen See the full photo essay here: https://edu.nl/pd7mp @Universiteit Maastricht

Gaan we ons misschien stiekem Europeser voelen? “All the last administrations in the United States, even under Obama, have emphasised that Europeans have been too complacent about their own security and defence.” After US President Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate in the presidential race, we asked Roberta Haar, Professor of Foreign Policy Analysis and Transatlantic Relations at Maastricht University, about the impact of Harris’ nomination on Washington’s relations with the EU. What would a Harris’ presidency mean for the EU’s foreign and defence policy? And, would it be a positive development for Europe’s economy? "Bluntly speaking, this is pretty much against all the rules in the EU’s book.” In our latest expert interview, Dr Giselle Bosse, Associate Professor and Jean Monnet Chair in EU International Relations, discusses how Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's actions during Hungary's EU Council presidency have upset many in Brussels. Professor Bosse highlights Orbán's controversial diplomatic moves, including engagements with leaders from Russia and China, and explains how these actions breach EU principles and strain relationships within the Union. What is, according to Bosse, the main motivation behind Orbán's actions and how do the member states respond to them? Dr Giselle Bosse specializes in EU International Relations and has extensive expertise in EU policies towards autocratic regimes and the post-Soviet area. "The 2024 elections gave a sense of the direction of the political wind currently blowing through Europe, even if it flies in the face of the ideals originally embraced by the pioneers of European elections." In the latest Mood of the Union article, our postdoctoral researchers Koen van Zon and Joris Melman offer a comprehensive analysis of the recent European Parliament elections. The article delves into the evolving political dynamics and their broader implications for the EU's future. This piece concludes the Mood of the Union project, which investigated the current political sentiments and public mood across Europe leading up to the 2024 elections. Studio Europa Maastricht collaborated with Eurozine, a network of European cultural journals dedicated to fostering cultural and political discourse, to provide a detailed understanding of the present European political landscape.
