Following attacks in the city of Solingen last month, in which the suspects were asylum seekers and the recent win of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in regional elections in Eastern Germany, the German government decided to tighten controls at all of its land borders, including the border with the Netherlands. What is the effectiveness of border control? Martin Unfried, senior researcher at ITEM/Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross-border cooperation and Mobility says that “Our research during the COVID pandemic shows that border controls are not effective. On the border street connecting Dutch Kerkrade and German Herzogenrath, Eline-Madeleine Schmeets, PhD researcher at Studio Europa Maastricht, explores the deeper, often overlooked aspects of cross-border cooperation beyond the usual European Symbolpolitik. After the fall of Europe’s last great wall, Neustraße/Nieuwstraat—spanning two kilometers between Kerkrade and Herzogenrath—was reopened in 1995 as a "shared" European street, embodying the spirit of collaboration and European integration.
