In my thesis, entitled “In silico patient. Systems medicine approach to inborn errors of metabolism”, I described several ways to optimise and apply various computational modelling approaches for the analysis of patient (comics) data and disease mechanisms. I predicted new biomarkers for Refsum disease (a disease in which the food component phytanic acid is not degraded) and for vitamin B2 deficiency. Also, I presented a new model for brain metabolism in phenylketonuria patients, linking diet…

I predicted new biomarkers for Refsum disease (a disease in which the food component phytanic acid is not degraded) and for vitamin B2 deficiency. Also, I presented a new model for brain metabolism in phenylketonuria patients, linking diet with serotonin and dopamine metabolism. Based on this model, I proposed a diet optimisation to reduce neurological symptoms in these patients. This model can also be applied to other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease, depression, or autism.

The Biotechnology track provides a thorough basics of science: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry and bioinformatics. In addition to the core subjects, such as: Industrial microbiology and Industrial biotechnology, which will enable our graduates to communicate with the engineers in future, we offer a range of courses from areas of modern biology, including molecular genetics, cell engineering, protein engineering, immunology or molecular modelling.
Professional bachelor's degree is obtained after completing all the compulsory courses, obtaining the required number of ECTS credits, writing a thesis and passing the final exam.
Undergraduate degree from biotechnology takes six semesters. The minimum number of credits earned by graduates is 186.

We are an organisation of (PhD-) students and young researchers and professionals in bioinformatics, computational biology and systems biology in the Netherlands, who aim to initiate and stimulate scientific discussion as well as collaboration between young scientists. Our organisation is the official Regional Student Group (RSG) Netherlands of the International Society of Computational Biology (ISCB). We strongly believe that there is a lot to learn from each other and there is nothing more inspiring than working on new ideas together. To achieve this, we closely collaborate with the Netherlands Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (BioSB) Research School and the ISCB Student Council. Being embedded in these organisations allows us to play a stepping-stone role to the national and international communities.
