By adopting a performativity theory framework, my research aimed to explore how class identities and social and spatial boundaries are produced, embodied, naturalized, and transformed through unintentional outcomes of individuals’ everyday consumption practices. The research draws on interviews with 18 higher-income women who shop in consumption spaces associated with lower income and in consumption spaces associated with higher-income consumers in São Paulo, Brazil, to explore how, through their shopping practices, these women conform to and subvert the higher income identity. In 1997, my project was selected as a top-ten undergraduate research at the University of São Paulo to be presented at the 1st Undergraduate Research Symposium at The State University of New Jersey.
