The initiative group 'The role of micronutrients in the acute phase of critical illness' was set up by patient and civil health organizations that sought collaboration with scientists.On the 13th of December a letter was sent to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to pay attention to Vitamin D again. The following press release was also released the next day:

The initiative group 'The role of micronutrients in the acute phase of critical illness' was set up by patient and civil health organizations that sought collaboration with scientists.On the 13th of December a letter was sent to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to pay attention to Vitamin D again. The following press release was also released the next day:

"We hereby draw your attention *) to our request to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to pay attention to Vitamin D again.
We are pleased that the government authorized the vitamin D product Hidroferol earlier this year for treatment of a vitamin D deficiency. It can significantly increase the vitamin D status in the blood in about four hours. This drug can therefore make a big difference in the need for ICU admission and the chance of survival if the treatment is started immediately after hospitalization. It is important that these new insights are incorporated into policy. This way, a lot of impact can be prevented in the short term.

We hope this can quickly contribute to alleviating the need for patients and our healthcare system.

Together with Arthur van Zanten en Peter Pickkers, I initiated the plan for a sepsis network which later developed in to SepsisNet. The SepsisNet foundation was started in the Netherlands in October 2019, as a result of the petition ‘SOS voor sepsis’, offered to the House of Representatives in January 2018

First Dutch peer meeting especially for former sepsis patients and their relatives, providing them with information, news and the opportunity to exchange experiences with other survivors and all those affected by this illness.

Offering ex-ICU-patients the tools to cope with the longterm sequelae of their critical ilness, providing them with new insights to make progress in their recovery.

The Family Centered Intensive Care group seeks to enhance awareness and initiatives regarding the support of patiënts and their families during ICU-stay as well as during their recovery. This group started as a result of the cooperation between 3 hospitals and the Lectoraat Acute Intensieve Zorg at the HAN (Hogeschool Arnhem en Nijmegen). The movement of Family Centered Intensive Care was awarded the Golden Ear Award (on the 30th of October) for listening to (the needs of) patients and… Meer weergeven

This petition was offered to the House of Representatives in the Netherlands, drawing attention to sepsis as an urgent matter in our Health care system as well as in our ICU's (cause of death number 1) and in our society. The sepsis awareness in the Netherlands is dramatically low. This petition resulted in a dialogue with the Ministry of Health and eventually in the support by the Ministry of VWS for a Dutch Sepsis Network and a Dutch Sepsis Conference to be held in 2020/2021.

Creating a possibility for ex-ICU patients and their relatives to exchange experiences and advice concerning long term-sequelae. In that way their recovery can be stimulated and improved. Another important goal is to stimulate the awareness among ICU-professionals regarding the effects of ICU-treatments on quality of life and the challenge to improve outcomes.
