The problem of designing for sustainability is to design for an unpredictable future. We know that there are environmental problems that require action, but when and to what degree these problems will occur remains uncertain. This requires a resilient design with no predetermined final image. In addition, a flexible implementation process is needed so that a district can continue to function within a range of possible scenarios. Atelier 7Up developed an approach in which designers, residents and stakeholders, in an informed way, collectively work in the here and now towards a sustainable future in the long term. It is based on a comprehensive perspective that argues that the ideas and needs of different stakeholders must always be seen in conjunction. Sustainable restructuring proposals can only be successful if both the environmental performance and the quality of life improve. The 7Up approach results to a new comparison of different forms of sustainable urban development and also provides insight into promising combinations and potential conflicts. The solutions led to a design and participation tool for sustainable urban (re)development. It consists of a set of (spatial) interventions (‘patterns’) that can be used by a wide variety of participants. Interventions on different scale levels are described on cards in a handy format together, by pointing out the problem, possible solutions and the processes that are required. The tool is not only inspiring, but at the same time gives practical instructions for starting a process of change. Stakeholders can understand the various transition processes in their neighborhood and not only have the ability to make choices but also to implement them.
