Info

Mandy has directed global and regional portfolios for private and family foundations that redistributed $14.5 million in grants and capacity building support to more than 35 groups in 10 countries that advance gender, racial, economic, and climate justice and build the infrastructure for narrative power.

She has twenty-five years of experience in participatory strategy development, building values-aligned organizational culture and practice, impact assessment, field building, philanthropic influencing, and recruitment and team management. She has a demonstrated track record in designing and implementing innovative, integrated initiatives that center the knowledge, lived experience, and solutions of those with an acute understanding of injustice. She approaches the work from a place of curiosity, deep listening, experimentation, learning, reflection, and iteration.

Proficient in systems thinking, Mandy’s practice is grounded in authentic relationships and cultivating ecosystems that create the conditions for systems transformation. Through her strong, expansive networks, she enables trust-based collaborations across sectors and thematic areas to overcome barriers to long-term impact. She has held leadership roles in several philanthropic initiatives, including Foundation for a Just Society, Nathan Cummings Foundation, Multitudes Foundation, Gender Funders CoLab, Grantmakers for Girls of Color, Critical Minded, and the Human Rights Funders Network.

Mandy's formal education is in organizational management and leadership, racial and ethnic inequalities, and intersectional, global feminisms. She has lived and worked in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Caribbean, West Africa, Europe, and the United States.

  • Hey, Shorty!: A Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment and Violence in Schools and on the Streets

    Feminist Press

Forty years after Title IX was passed by the federal government to end to gender discrimination in public schools, sexual harassment continues to plague the lives of young women and LGBTQ youth. Research shows the effects bullying has on school children can range from poor grades to suicide, yet many dismiss this kind of gender-based violence as a rite of passage for adolescents. Hey Shorty! captures the story of a group of young women and adult allies at Girls for Gender Equity as they struggle to make the New York City schools safer for all students.

This new book from activists Joanne Smith, Mandy Van Deven, and Meghan Huppuch provides a detailed narrative of the achievements and setbacks of a youth-led grassroots organizing campaign and participatory action research project that uncovered stark truths about the ubiquity of sexual harassment in young people's lives. It offers an accessible guide for young women and adult allies to combat unwanted sexual attention in educational environments and public space and demonstrates that young women can successfully demand accountability while cultivating their own ability to live self-determined lives.

Geared toward students, parents, teachers, policymakers, and activists, Hey Shorty! is an excellent tool for building awareness and creating change in any community.

This issue of The Scholar and Feminist Online captures a core principle of feminism: the need for a diverse many to work together — noisily yet mellifluously — while recognizing, honoring, bridging, and preserving their differences. Audre Lorde's injunction to let difference be a creative bridge to the other has been one of the foremost challenges of feminist politics. Yet, it is the differences among feminists that have led to some of the most vibrant and lasting ideas, practices, and movements. In a panoply of sound, sight, and text, Polyphonic Feminisms: Acting in Concert does not demand unity or agreement, but rather allows for a flourishing of ruminations on what feminism is, where it has been, and what paths it might travel forward — imagining a world remade by many feminisms.
