  • DelftX MOOC Evaluation & Research

    TU Delft has been a leader in open education, being one of the first European universities that consistently supported the publication of course materials (Delft Open Courseware), and since 2013, as an active provider of MOOCs on the edX platform.

    Together with Pieter de Vries, I have been responsible for the development of the evaluation infrastructure to evaluate and research the TU Delft MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Between 5000 and 60.000 students sign up for the TU Delft…

    TU Delft has been a leader in open education, being one of the first European universities that consistently supported the publication of course materials (Delft Open Courseware), and since 2013, as an active provider of MOOCs on the edX platform.

    Together with Pieter de Vries, I have been responsible for the development of the evaluation infrastructure to evaluate and research the TU Delft MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Between 5000 and 60.000 students sign up for the TU Delft MOOCs (URL: edx.org), and about 30 MOOCs have been developed in the first three years.

    He has a strong research network and his recent publications address topics such as the role of assessment in MOOCs, diversity (gender, culture) in online courses, pedagogy, and collaborative learning.

    iii) Design and co-organize online math courses (miniMOOCs) and pedagogical design of open courseware.
    iv) Investigate and design innovative and motivating didactic forms for math education, in particular (alternate reality) games, gamification, and project-based learning.

    The REACT project was an educational innovation and research project based on project-based learning principles, involving international and local collaboration between learners for the development of transversal competences. Various schools and educational institutes from six European countries participated in piloting the approach and integrating principles such as trust, relevance, self-guidance, challenge, creativity, and collaboration in the educational activities. There were successful and less successful pilots (12 in total), but the outcomes were analyzed and provided a rich picture of contextual and pedagogical elements that influence the successful implementation of such an approach and how to address disengaged youth and provide them with the confidence and tools to enable self-directed and engaged learning.
