Our discussion revolved around a captivating topic: "What happened to the Arctic economies throughout COVID and into the first year of the geopolitical crisis (2017-2022)?" Our presentation explored the various factors influencing Arctic economies during this period, providing valuable insights for the future. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our generous hosts at Institute of the North. Thank you for the warm welcome and the opportunity to share our research with such an engaged audience. Exploring innovation potential on the Arctic labor market 📈   Our recent analysis reveals striking contrasts on the labor market across the Arctic. Today, let’s look at the share of employees in BUSINESS SERVICES as % of total employment (graph below). Share of employment in Business services ranges from 21,1% in Iceland down to 6,4% in Greenland, while other parts of the Arctic stay in between.   Business services sector is one of the most important contributors to cross-sectoral cooperation and innovations. This sector is most gender-balanced, and it accommodates highly educated employees with salaries well above average.   Higher share of employees in business services means better potential to develop knowledge-based economy and overcome dependence on natural resources in the Arctic.   Business services includes economic activities within information and communication, real estate, professional, scientific, and technical activities, financial and insurance activities, as well as administrative and support service activities.   Share of employees in business services in the Arctic areas of Canada, USA (Alaska), Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia remain lower than respective country average. As we see, the further North you go, the less innovation economy potential there is.
