Last month, we proudly inaugurated our renewable #hydrogen plant at Herøya Industripark AS in Porsgrunn, Norway! This marks a major milestone for Yara Clean Ammonia and Yara International in decarbonizing the food value chain, shipping fuel, and other energy-intensive industries. Our 24 MW plant, the largest of its kind in operation in Europe, uses renewable energy to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis, cutting 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. 🌿💧 Collaboration is key to the green transition, requiring significant investments, advanced technology, and robust renewable energy infrastructure. 💡 At Yara Porsgrunn, we’ve cut emissions by 67% since 2005 and we are committed to delivering decarbonized solutions at scale for a sustainable future. 🤝 Interested to know what renewable ammonia looks like? We are excited to announce a new partnership between Yara Clean Ammonia, Scatec ASA, ECHEM and MOPCO for renewable #ammonia offtake.    The Heads of Terms agreement between the companies, will boost regional development and see the production of up to 150,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia per annum at MOPCO's Damietta site using 480 MW of renewable energy and a 240 MW electrolyser facility. 🌍    "Yara Clean Ammonia has a diversified portfolio of asset-backed and offtake agreements for low-emission ammonia. This project will further strengthen our sourcing portfolio of renewable ammonia and is a testimony to Yara Clean Ammonia as the most preferred off-taker and the world's largest trader and distributor of ammonia. Once the project has reached a final investment decision, we will supply the renewable ammonia to customers using it as a low-emission shipping fuel for cracking to cut emissions in other industries or fertilizer production," says Yara Clean Ammonia CEO Hans-Olav Raen.   "We are very pleased to be signing this Heads of Terms with global industry leader Yara Clean Ammonia. This is a testament to Scatec's position in Egypt and our strategy to focus on developing renewable hydrogen projects related to existing ammonia production capacity. Today, I had the honour of speaking at the @IFEMAconference about the role that #hydrogen plays in driving the future of the energy transition. A central point of the discussion was the scalability of low-carbon (blue) #ammonia production over renewable (green) ammonia, thanks to readily available and adaptable technology, critical for rapid emission reductions. To achieve this at scale, the following is needed: 1. Access to abundant, competitively priced renewable energy. With a global ammonia network, diversified sourcing and economies of scale, Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA) can keep the costs down in the supply chain delivering low-emission ammonia at competitive prices. 2. Strategic collaborations, like our partnership with @Cepsa, to unlock the green corridor from Andalucía to Rotterdam and ensure low-emission molecules are available in ports worldwide for deep-sea ships. 3. Supply chain. Yara Clean Ammonia operates the world’s largest ammonia network with 15 ships and 18 terminals. We will use this unique position to further grow and strengthen our leading global position unlocking the clean ammonia value chains together with our partners. 4. Safety. With over 100 years of experience in ammonia production, shipping, and handling, Yara Clean Ammonia is dedicated to sharing best practices across the industry. "Renewable ammonia is an important part of the decarbonization puzzle, however developing it at scale takes time. As the world is rapidly approaching 2030, we are also working to produce low-carbon ammonia with CCS to enable the hydrogen economy and develop the emerging markets for low-emission ammonia," says Hans-Olav Raen, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia.   Last week, we celebrated the inauguration of our 24 MW renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya Industrial Park in Porsgrunn. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who was with us at the project's launch two years ago, returned to witness its realization. 🌿 Once fully operational, this plant will produce around 20,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually, cutting 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from the site. As the largest facility of its kind in Europe, it plays a crucial role in enhancing production whilst cutting emissions. 🌍🎯 We recognize that scaling up production won’t be easy. 🎊Yara Clean Ammonia's renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya, Norway is officially open!🎊      We have reached a major milestone in our decarbonization journey by producing hydrogen and ammonia with renewable energy. 🎉  Made with electrolysis of water and renewable energy, the hydrogen produced at the plant will replace natural gas as feedstock and annually cut 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from the site, marking an important step in our decarbonization journey! ♻️    💚 This project has come to life thanks to partnerships across the whole value chain. A big thank you to Lantmännen, who’s been committed as a customer since the very start. The hurdles we’ve encountered in the project have been solved thanks to trust and close cooperation with our EPC-contractor Linde Engineering and PEM electrolyser manufacturer ITM Power. We also want to thank Enova SF for contributing with a grant, enabling us to reach the investment decision.   Yara Clean Ammonia is also working to enable the hydrogen economy by producing low-carbon ammonia with carbon capture & storage (CCS). Essential to reach the Paris Agreement, low-carbon ammonia and CCS is a critical step to decarbonize rapidly and profitably. Hans-Olav Raen, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia, and Kolli Mahesh, President of AM Green, have officially signed a term sheet that is set to shape the future of renewable energy. 🌟 #HM24 that’s a wrap. It's been great to take part in the HANNOVER MESSE this year, as a partner country, the spotlight was on initiatives in driving the green shift.   A key highlight from the event was the statement by German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck during the Renewable Dialogue - North Sea Energy Hub. He emphasized:   “You have all the colours of the rainbow when it comes to hydrogen. But in the end, the only thing that matters is how much CO2 emissions we can save.” 🌈   At Yara Clean Ammonia, we wholeheartedly agree. The world is closing in on 2030 and action is required to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement.   As the global demand for hydrogen increases, we need to use all technologies at our disposal to address the climate emergency. 👏 Exciting developments are underway at Yara Pilbara Fertilizers Pty Ltd (YPF) as a technical feasibility study is explored to add Carbon Capture and Storage to rapidly decarbonize its existing process operations near Karratha in Western Australia. “Carbon capture and storage for our current operations in the Burrup Strategic Industrial Area would deliver a swifter and immediate benefit in cutting our CO2 emissions by around 75 per cent as we scale up the use of renewable hydrogen,” said Yara Pilbara General Manager Laurent Trost. The YPF plant uses gas as a feedstock to produce more than 800,000 tonnes of ammonia, which makes up a key component of global fertilizer stocks and food production. 🌿🌍 A future low-emission ammonia production will also serve new emerging markets like the shipping sector, power production, industrial solutions, and clean ammonia as a hydrogen carrier. 🚢 With eyes on the horizon, Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA) is actively collaborating with the Pilbara Ports Authority to explore ammonia as a sustainable alternative fuel for shipping.
