JETS HAWKIN’ FOLEY

A deal to send Glenn Foley from the Jets to the Seahawks is imminent.

According to sources familiar with the Jets and Foley, the deal is all but done for a sixth- or seventh-round draft pick. According to the source, the deal has been held up only while the Jets renegotiate Foley’s contract, which has one year remaining on the two-year, $3 million contract he most recently signed.

Foley, who’s due $10,000 bonuses for each day he attends the Jets’ off-season conditioning program, which begins later in the month, was going to cost the Jets about $2 million on the 1999 salary cap unless a renegotiated deal was done and/or he was traded.

The Jets, who are without a No. 1 pick in next month’s draft and have only six picks, have been talking to teams about a number of possibilities that would bring them more picks.

As for Foley, who desperately wants to play, his time with the Jets ran out with the resurgence of Vinny Testaverde’s career.

According to those close to Foley, though he badly wanted to stay in New York, his desire to play outweighs that and he’s excited about the possibilities in Seattle.

Firstly, he’ll be playing for former Packers coach Mike Holmgren. And, he may have a chance to wrest the starting job away from John Kitna, who ended up as the starter at the end of last season.
