‘X-FILES:’ THE FINAL MYSTERY

THE truth is out there — but we don’t know it yet.

“The X-Files” is scheduled to start shooting its season finale within the next two weeks — but no one knows yet whether it will also turn out to be the final episode for one of the decade’s most popular shows.

The contracts for the show’s star, David Duchovny, and its creator and producer, Chris Carter expire at the end of this season — and no decision has been made yet about whether Fox will continue with only co-star, Gillian Anderson.

Because of that, it appears likely there will be no explosive series finale — chock full of catharsis and closure — that viewers have come to expect from long-running shows.

It also means no ratings bonanza like those produced by the final episodes of such shows as “M*A*S*H” and “Seinfeld.”

Duchovny has said that this, his seventh year, will be his last — and Carter has said that he does not want to do the show without Duchovny.

“No matter what happens on TV, there’s been a lot of talk about continuing the franchise as [theatrical] films, so it’s not like they’re going to kill off Mulder and Scully,” a source close to the show said.
