TEAR-FILLED TEAMSTER TESTIMONY

The secretary to ex-Teamsters boss Ron Carey broke down in tears on the witness stand testifying against her old boss yesterday – but still insisted he knew about a dirty campaign cash scheme.

Monian Simpkins told a Manhattan federal jury that Carey had signed off on Teamster contributions to outside groups that then helped funnel money back into Carey’s 1996 election campaign.

As the fund-raising fiasco unraveled, Simpkins realized she was in serious trouble and began cooperating with investigators.

She began crying as she told the packed courtroom that she had to leave her job temporarily because of emotional problems.

She described Carey as an “excellent” boss, but his lawyer Reid Weingarten tried to paint her as a key schemer in the plot who shielded her boss from any knowledge of the funny-money mess.
