HARD-LUCK MCGRAW OUT FOR SEASON

JET NOTES

Free safety Jon McGraw, who attempted to come back from a partially dislocated right shoulder in the team’s 38-31 loss to the Colts Sunday, will not play again this season after aggravating the injury in the game.

McGraw, who was in his first season as a starter, was placed on injured reserve yesterday and is scheduled to have surgery Friday and return next season.

Taking McGraw’s roster spot will be defensive tackle Josh Evans, who was activated to the roster yesterday after practicing for two weeks following the NFL reinstating him from his substance abuse suspension.

* In other injury news, Jets defensive end John Abraham, who’s listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars with a groin injury that’s kept him out the last three games, is expected to return to the lineup.

The Jets’ other Abraham – Donnie – is expected to return to his starting cornerback position after missing the last eight games with a fracture in his right shoulder. He’s listed as probable.

Jets’ backup running back LaMont Jordan suffered a fractured left finger in the game but is listed as probable and is expected to play, according to Herman Edwards.

Reserve DB David Young pulled a hamstring and might miss the rest of the season.

Edwards said he expects Kevin Lockett, the WR the Jets signed when Wayne Chrebet was placed on IR, to be activated for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars, the team that cut him in preseason.

“Why not? He’s here, he might as well play,” Edwards said.

* Edwards yesterday weighed in on the controversial THG steroid situation that the NFL is dealing with, saying, “Players are in a performance business and we’re asking them to perform at a very, very high level. And there are going to be guys that feel like they need to do something to make sure they can stay at a high level. That’s just human nature.”

Edwards reasoned that there are “probably” plenty of players who’ve used the THG steroid who’d better get off of it now that the NFL is testing for it.

“You never know what guys are doing when they’re not here … and no one can control that,” Edwards said.
