City employees failing to make court-ordered child-support payments will be hit with stiff penalties under a City Hall crackdown on deadbeats, Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday.
Deadbeats among the Big Apple’s roughly 300,000 city workers may have their tax rebates intercepted, their bank accounts frozen or their drivers licenses suspended if they fail to make child-support payments on time and in full.
“Our administration has zero tolerance for deadbeats who fail to feed, clothe and care for their children,” Bloomberg said.
All city employees will today receive a notice detailing the mayor’s crackdown in a letter accompanying their paychecks.
Though the city has for years maintained the ability to garnishee the wages of deadbeats, Bloomberg wanted to “send a message to the public,” according to a City Hall aide.
There are roughly 9,500 city employees with child-support orders in place, according to officials from the Human Resources Administration.
“Almost all of [them] comply with their court orders,” HRA Commissioner Verna Eggleston said in a written statement.
