EMMONS, COUGHLIN AT ODDS

GIANT NOTES

ALBANY – This was all expected, according to linebacker Carlos Emmons.

This was not expected, according to Tom Coughlin.

Huh?

Emmons, the prize of the Giants’ free-agent class, arrived in camp still mending from the broken left leg he suffered in the next-to-last game of last season. Emmons decided he wanted to test the leg and participated in one practice per day, but when the leg became sore and swollen, he stopped working. He finally returned yesterday, for the first time since Aug. 4, on a limited basis.

Asked if he anticipated Emmons missing so much time, Coughlin said “No, none of us were told or expected that. I don’t think Carlos did, either.”

That’s not the way Emmons anticipated dealing with his injury.

“I knew it was gonna be like this when I came to camp,” he said. “I was still in the rehab process. I came in and pushed it kind of hard because I wanted to push it, I knew I may hurt it but I wasn’t really concerned about that.”

Did the Giants and Coughlin know about this?

“They talked to the doctors; everybody knew, they get the same information I get,” Emmons said.

Reminded how frustrated Coughlin appeared to be about the situation, Emmons added, “I can’t do nothing about how he feels.”

RT David Diehl gave the team a scare in the afternoon when he limped off the field holding the back of his right leg after getting knocked down on a running play. He was carted off and the Giants said he had nothing more than cramps. DE Khaleed Vaughn also left with cramps . . . Jesse Palmer hasn’t practiced since Friday’s game in Charlotte because of an abdominal strain and he might not be able to play vs. the Jets. In that case, Ryan Van Dyke may get mop-up time as the third quarterback.

DE Michael Strahan and WR Ataveus Cash got into a feisty but playful war of words in the afternoon, with Strahan shouting “It’s gonna get ugly” to one of Cash’s retorts. When Cash responded, Coughlin walked by and said, “Shut up, Cash.” End of conversation.
