A DOGGONE SHAME

A LETTER TO TRUE 1/2

(one and one half stars)

DOG lovers may want to add a star or two, but for the rest of us, Bruce Weber’s “A Letter to True” is about as exciting as watching someone else’s home movies – albeit, beautifully photographed ones.

Weber showcases his family of handsome golden retrievers, as well as the pets of his celebrity canine-fancying pals like Elizabeth Taylor and the late British actor Dirk Bogarde (who are seen in clips from their films, most notably extended excerpts from Liz’s “Son of Lassie”).

Weber, the noted fashion photographer (those notorious Calvin Klein ads) who has also directed a series of documentaries (most notably “Let’s Get Lost”), also throws in vaguely homoerotic footage of hunky farm boys splashing in mud puddles with their dogs.

And he also delivers stunningly superficial commentary on the plight of Haitian refugees and criticism of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, announcing at one point in his inane narration that one of his dogs is “still recovering from the effects of Sept. 11.”

Running time: 78 minutes. Not rated (nothing offensive). At Film Forum, Houston and Varick streets.
