CITY SET TO BOOT ‘TOW’ SCAMMERS

The city is cracking down on corrupt towing companies after getting several complaints against three businesses accused of price gouging and towing cars that were legally parked.

“These violations are classic towing nightmares and the Department of Consumer Affairs is serious about making sure private cars and drivers are protected,” DCA Commissioner Gretchen Dykstra said yesterday.

The city is trying to revoke towing licenses for the Port of NYC in Brooklyn, Yankee Mike’s Towing in Queens and NY’s Finest Towing in The Bronx.

Each company faces $100,000 in fines. A hearing is scheduled for next Wdnesday.

Yankee Mike’s is accused of charging more than double the legal rate for towing services, according to Dykstra.

Port of NYC has had more than 40 consumer complaints filed against it. And NY’s Finest Towing still owes the city $4,000 for operating without a proper booting license.

“We are pursuing all legal options with these companies and be assured, we will take action to put any tower that acts unlawfully out of business,” Dykstra said.
