MIKE TO GOV: SIGN ABORT-PILL BILL

Gov. Pataki should sign the emergency-contraception legislation, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

“I was disappointed that [Pataki indicated he would veto] the bill,” said Bloomberg, who recently received the endorsement of the National Abortion Rights Action League.

“I’d like to see this piece of legislation get enacted.”

Pataki has announced that he plans to veto the measure when it reaches his desk, saying it would make emergency contraception available to minors.

Some critics say Pataki has flip-flopped on the issue – pointing out that he was the first governor to have Medicaid pay for the abortion-inducing morning-after pill, RU-486, without any age limits.

“He has been very supportive of women’s right to choose in the past,” Bloomberg added.
