GIRARDI MAY WAIT FOR YANKS TO CALL

ST. LOUIS – While speculation ran high at the World Series that Joe Girardi could be rejoining Joe Torre’s coaching staff after removing himself from the Nationals’ managing picture, there hasn’t been contact between the club and Girardi, who served as Torre’s bench coach in 2005.

“I don’t know what I am doing yet,” Girardi said at Busch Stadium last night before Game 3 of the World Series. “The Yankees have not called about a coaching job.”

A more likely scenario is Girardi returning to YES, where he worked in 2004.

Girardi left the Yankees to manage the Marlins this past season when he did well enough to be considered the NL Manager of the Year. But he was fired due to a personality conflict with owner Jeffrey Loria.

It’s believed Brian Cashman and Torre are waiting for George Steinbrenner’s blessing to bring back Torre’s staff intact.

Of course, with Girardi out of the picture in Washington, Yankees first base coach Tony Pena could land the job.

Pena, a former Royals manager, spoke to Washington brass for an hour on the phone about the job after the Yankees were eliminated in the ALDS by the Tigers.
