HUNT FOR BX. SLAY SUSPECT

Police are looking to question a Bronx man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman who was trying to stop a fight between friends.

Benjamin Waters, 33, allegedly plunged a kitchen knife into Caroline Vargas, 28, when she tried to separate him from his roommate at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday in their apartment at 306 E. 180th St. in Tremont, police said.

Vargas had gone to the men’s apartment to play cards, relatives said.

The 6-foot, 165-pound Waters, who has shoulder-length, braided hair, fled, leaving Vargas bleeding on the floor, police said.

She was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she died.

“They were arguing, and she tried to intervene,” said Juan Ramirez, Vargas’ brother-in-law. “She was stabbed in the torso. She was just trying to help.”

Waters was last seen running out of the building with blood on his clothes, police said.

Vargas has a 4-month-old daughter, Janelle, who was with her grandmother in Manhattan at the time of the murder.

Anyone with information as to Waters’ whereabouts is asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. Calls will be kept confidential.
