MLB: Twins’ Mauer on 15-day DL

Twins catcher Joe Mauer went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quadriceps muscle.

The AL batting champion had an MRI exam yesterday morning and missed his second straight game. Test results revealed a strain, and the Twins recalled catcher Chris Heintz from Triple-A Rochester to take Mauer’s place following yesterday’s 4-3 loss to Boston. The move is retroactive to May 5.

NASCAR: Jimmie Johnson wins another for Hendrick

Jimmie Johnson led teammate Kyle Busch to a 1-2 finish at Richmond (Va.)International Raceway, the third consecutive victory for Hendrick Motorsports.

Hendrick has won seven of the past eight Nextel Cup races and swept all four races in which NASCAR has used its new Car of Tomorrow.

It looked as if Hendrick would finish 1-2-3 for the final 100 laps of the race, as Johnson, Busch and pole-sitter Jeff Gordon battled for the lead. But Gordon faded over the final 15 laps and gave up third place to Denny Hamlin.

TENNIS: Sampras captures senior tour event

For Pete Sampras, it was a day to live dangerously.

First, the future Hall of Famer faced a triple match point against Todd Martin in the final of the Champion’s Cup event at Boston University. Then, between beating Martin and grabbing the first-prize check of $50,000, Sampras shared some bad news with the Red Sox fans in the crowd.

“I don’t know if you guys heard, but I believe the New York Yankees just signed Roger Clemens,” Sampras said during the trophy ceremony as the crowd of 3,560 erupted in boos. “I’m serious.”

The former U.S. Open champion, once ranked No. 1 and still ranked No. 4, initially planned to quit after the season. Now, with injuries having exacted too much and her thoughts turning to family and a “new life,” her retirement is immediate.

* In Oeiras, Portugal, Novak Djokovic won his third ATP title of 2007, beating Richard Gasquet 7-6 (7), 0-6, 6-1 in the Estoril Open final.
