Pelfrey not sharp in 10-inning loss

JUPITER, Fla. — A quick wrap-up after the Mets’ 6-5 Grapefruit League loss here to the Cardinals in 10 innings:

1. Mike Pelfrey bounced back slightly yesterday but didn’t give El Duque much reason to sweat the fifth and final spot in the rotation. Pelfrey gave up just one earned run in 4 2/3 innings but yielded six hits and walked two while laboring through a hefty 88 pitches. The young right-hander’s change-up was good, but his fastball was all over the place.

2. The Mets teed off on former Met right-hander Braden Looper, pounding out four runs on seven hits in Looper’s four innings of work. Looper also walked two and is sporting an 11.57 ERA this spring.

3. Catcher Brian Schneider’s sore right hamstring is acting up again and will keep him out of the lineup for a few more days. Schneider hurt himself again in his first game back Monday after a nine-day absence.

4. Relievers Matt Wise, Jorge Sosa and Pedro Feliciano all allowed their first runs of the spring this year. Sosa had been working on a seven-inning scoreless streak, while Wise was at six innings and Feliciano at five.

5. Non-roster pitcher Joselo Diaz did little to help his chances, giving up the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th on a single to right by Rico Washington that scored Skip Schumaker.

6. The Mets reassigned infielder Michel Abreu and pitcher Carlos Muniz yesterday while optioning pitcher Willie Collazo.

7. The Mets, who fell to 9-6-1 with the loss, will return to Roger Dean Stadium here in Jupiter tomorrow for a 1:05 p.m. game with the Marlins, who share this facility with the Cardinals. John Maine will start for the Mets against Florida’s Ricky Nolasco.
