CARMAKERS’ HYBRID HELP FOR TAXICABS

Major automakers are jumping aboard the city’s plan to make its yellow cabs green.

Amid concerns there will not be enough hybrids available to meet the city’s requirement that all new taxis after Oct. 1 get 25 mpg, three car companies are coming to the rescue by making up to 300 vehicles per month available to cabbies.

“[They] have gone above and beyond,” Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

The companies – Nissan, GM and Ford – will supply up to 200 Altimas, 50 Malibus and 50 Escapes monthly.
