FALSE ALARM NO BIG DEAL FOR WAGNER

CINCINNATI – The Mets have endured so many injuries this season, you always expect the worse when you see a trainer step on the field.

But trainer Ray Ramirez’s visit to the mound with Jerry Manuel in the 10th inning to check on Billy Wagner was no big deal, the closer said.

Wagner had trouble getting loose when he was warming up and he said it felt like he had a cramp in his shoulder.

“I think I pulled right on through,” Wagner said.

He told Ramirez and Manuel he was fine, then struck out the side to end the game.

A Mets spokesman said if Wagner is feeling discomfort today, he will be sent for an examination.

Jose Reyes had a big day yesterday, going 4-for-6, in a stadium that traditionally has given him trouble. The biggest hit for Reyes was a leadoff triple in the fourth inning. That hit was the 63rd triple of his career, moving him past Mookie Wilson and into first place on the all-time Mets list.

Pedro Martinez played long-toss yesterday and said he felt even better than Saturday when he threw lightly in the bullpen. The plan is for him to long-toss again tomorrow and throw off a mound if he feels up to it.

Martinez had a cortisone shot in his right hip on Thursday to relieve pain in his right groin. He is expected to start this weekend against the Cardinals.

Reliever Duaner Sanchez threw two hitless innings. He used a windup that had him turning his back almost completely to the hitters at some points, something he said he did two years ago before he injured his shoulder. Now he’s just feeling well enough to try it again.

“I needed to get the strength back in my arm before I could start messing around with stuff like that,” Sanchez said. “Now everything is fine. I feel good. The strength in my arm is good, so now I feel free to do anything I was doing before.”
