TOURNEY FIELD MAY END UP PRETTY BIG

With just a few weeks remaining before full-scale March Madness, you can count on the following Big East teams going to the NCAA Tournament: Connecticut, Louisville, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Villanova, West Virginia.

But the list may not end there. There are several other teams with a shot.

The Hoyas (14-10, 5-8 Big East) have played the nation’s third toughest schedule and have a great non-conference win against Memphis. Three of their last five league games are at home. They need four more wins before the league tourney.

You would think Providence (16-10, 8-6) looks good. Nope. The Friars only big win came against Syracuse. With a schedule that finishes against ND, Pitt, at Rutgers and Villanova, the Friars, with an RPI of 66, could be looking at a 1-3 finish.

Cincinnati (17-9, 7-6) has drastically overachieved, especially considering coach Mick Cronin lost projected starting point guard Cashmere Wright before the season. The Bearcats swept G’town but were swept by Providence. Their strength of schedule (22) helps. Wins in consecutive home games against Louisville and West Virginia could put the ‘Cats over the bubble.

What began as a promising season has come crashing down for Notre Dame (14-11, 5-8). Wednesday night’s loss at West Virginia, when the Irish blew a 10-point lead, might have been the final dagger. RPI is 74 (ugh). Perhaps Gerry McNamara should speak to the team before the league tournament.

Now, with less than one month to go, here’s an early look at invites and envelopes:

All-Big East team – Luke Harangody, Notre Dame; Hasheem Thabeet, Connecticut; DeJuan Blair, Pitt; Jerel McNeal, Marquette; and Terrence Williams, Louisville.

All-Rookie – Greg Monroe, Georgetown; Yancy Gates, Cincy; Mike Rosario, Rutgers; Kemba Walker, UConn; Jermaine Dixon, Pitt.

Coach of the Year – Jamie Dixon, Pitt
