SPARTANS UPEND NO. 1 SEED DUKE

Michigan State fans came to boo their former coach.

They left cheering for the Spartans.

Mia Johnson scored 17 points and Lauren Aitch had 15, lifting ninth-seeded Michigan State to a 63-49 win over the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils and former coach Joanne P. McCallie last night in East Lansing, Mich., in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Duke (27-6) didn’t make a shot for the last 7½ minutes as it was outscored 16-2.

Connecticut 87, Florida 59

In Storrs, Conn., Renee Montgomery scored 25 points in her final game at home and undefeated Connecticut (35-0) advanced to the regional semifinals for the 16th straight year.

Tina Charles had 22 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double this season, and Maya Moore added 22 points and 14 rebounds for her 16th.

Maryland 71, Utah 56

In College Park, Md., Marissa Coleman had 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, Kristi Toliver scored 17, and top-seed Maryland (30-4) advanced to the regional semifinals.

Oklahoma 69, Georgia Tech 50

In Iowa City, Danielle Robinson scored 17 points and had seven assists, Whitney Hand added 15 and the top-seeded Sooners advance to regional semifinals.

Courtney Paris finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and six blocks missing out on a double-double for just the seventh time in 134 career games.

NIT TOURNAMENT

Baylor 74, Auburn 72

Curtis Jerrells grabbed a key rebound then made one of two free throws with 6.9 seconds left, helping visiting Baylor to advance to the semifinals of the NIT.

Kevin Rogers added 19 points and nine rebounds to help the Bears (23-14) extend their improbable run after finishing ninth in the Big 12 Conference and going 59 years without a postseason win.

Penn State 71, Florida 62

In Gainesville, Fla., Jamelle Cornley had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Penn State (25-11).

The Gators used a late run to cut the lead to 61-59, but Penn State turned to Cornley down the stretch. Nick Calathes missed two 3-pointers in the final minutes for Florida (25-11).
