Report: In-house divide on Plaxico

ProFootballTalk.com reports that the Jets’ hierarchy is divided on whether to sign wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

The Web site speculates that head coach Rex Ryan doesn’t want to deal with Burress’ work habits, and GM Mike Tannenbuam, whose job may be in jeopardy, would like to significantly upgrade the team at wide receiver.

Owner Woody Johnson reportedly said on the “Boomer Esiason Show” that the team was in a “holding pattern” in their pursuit of Burress, based on unresolved legal issues related to a gun charge. Burress’ former teammate TIm Hasselbeck, now with ESPN, backed Ryan’s reported position last week, calling Burress a “disaster as a guy you have to coach.”

Johnson also mentioned that there are other talented wide receivers that may be available, a group that includes Broncos WR Brandon Marshall, who is seeking a trade out of Denver.

Marshall’s former teammate Jay Cutler, now with the Bears after a similar trade demand, told the Newport News Daily Press he’d welcome Marshall in Chicago.

“I played with Brandon for three years and I think he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL,” Cutler told the paper at a football camp. “I think he can be one of the greatest ever to play. …

“I don’t know what we’re going to do. That’s up to the guys upstairs. If we make a run at him, we make a run at him.”
