NFL: Pacman works out for Bengals

Former Titans and Cowboys cornerback AdamPacmanJones worked out for the Bengals yesterday, according to an ESPN.com report.

The workout is thought to be Jones’ first with an NFL team since the Cowboys released him in February 2009.

* The Rams announced that their majority owners have agreed to sell their stake to a potential buyer who doesn’t want to relocate the once-proud franchise. If approved by a 75 percent vote of NFL owners, Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez, the children of the late Rams owner Georgia Frontiere, will sell their 60 percent stake to auto parts magnate Shahid Khan.

* The Jaguars released receiver Torry Holt, left tackle Tra Thomas and defensive tackle Rob Meier. Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection with St. Louis, caught 51 passes for 722 yards with the Jaguars last season. He has 920 career receptions for 13,382 yards and 74 touchdowns.

GOLF: Johnson leads at Pebble

In Pebble Beach, Calif., defending champion Dustin Johnson birdied his last five holes on a peaceful day at Pebble Beach and is atop the leaderboard after an 8-under 64 in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

J.B. Holmes had an eagle-birdie finish to shoot 65 at Pebble Beach, along with K.J. Choi. Charley Hoffman had a 6-under 64 on the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula. The best score at Spyglass Hill belonged to David Duval and Matt Jones at 5-under 67.

* In Guragon, India, Marcel Siem of Germany birdied the ninth hole en route to an 8-under 64 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the European Tour’s Avantha Masters tournament.

COLLEGE: Binghamton slammed

A four-month investigation into troubles in the Binghamton University athletic department found school officials failed to act when problems arose, including dubious enrollments and lax enforcement of academic standards for athletes.

A 99-page report recommends hiring an “athletic oversight officer” for the entire State University of New York system.

* Penn State coach Joe Paterno had vision surgery last month, eliminating the need for those smoky, Coke bottle-thick frames that had become as much a part of the 83-year-old’s trademark sideline look.

* In Hackensack, Wagner surrendered a late 9-2 run in falling to Fairleigh Dickson, 70-65. . . . St. Francis of Brooklyn fell to Quinnipiac, 77-65, in Hamden, Conn.

NASCAR: Johnson, Kahne win

In Daytona Beach, Fla., Jimmie Johnson nipped Kevin Harvick in a door-to-door battle across the finish line of the first Daytona 500 qualifier, while Kasey Kahne edged Tony Stewart in the second race.

Michael Waltrip wrecked in the first qualifier, and nervously watched the second as Scott Speed used a late-race pass to earn the position needed to get Waltrip a spot in what is expected to be the final Daytona 500 of his career.

* Danica Patrick posted the fifth-fastest speed during a Nationwide series practice session ahead of tomorrow’s race at Daytona, but said her primary goal was simply finish the race, calling it “300 miles of practice.”

ETC.: England soccer starter hurt

England left back Ashley Cole broke his left ankle during a challenge from Landon Donovan on Wednesday, an injury that will sideline Cole — who plays for Chelsea — for about three months but should allow him to return for the World Cup.

* In San Jose, Calif., Andy Roddick reached the quarterfinals for the eighth time at the SAP Open, defeating Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

* In Ottawa, Chris Phillips and Alex Kovalev scored in the third period in the Senators’ 6-5 victory over the Capitals, helping Ottawa win for the 13th time in 14 games.
