Hire aspirations

When it comes to hiring former military members, not all companies are created equal. A growing number of large firms have established veteran recruiting programs and otherwise adopted vet-friendly policies.

Such efforts are tracked by the Pennsylvania-based magazine G.I. Jobs, which each year publishes its list of Top 100 Military Friendly Employers, drawn from a survey of some 5,000 large companies.

The rankings take into account companies’ demonstrated commitment to hiring vets, as well outreach efforts and the presence of programs aimed at transitioning and retaining military hires. Existing policies friendly to Army reservists and National Guard members are also considered.

Five New York-based companies made the 2011 list. Leading at No. 17 was ITT, headquartered in White Plains. The rest are based in New York City: Deloitte (No. 34), The Travelers Companies (No. 35), L-3 Communications (No. 50) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (No. 84).

Six of the companies making the Top 10 were defense contractors, including Booz Allen Hamilton, ManTech International, URS, CACI International, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.

The other four companies rounding out the Top 10 were the transportation firms CSX and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., the industrial products firm Johnson Controls, and the insurance giant USAA.
