Consumer Reports says . . .

The new iPhone 5 got early kudos from Consumer Reports researchers yesterday.

“It’s a better phone,” said Paul Reynolds, the magazine’s electronics editor. “It should be among the first-ranked of smartphones.”

“It’s very fast. The combination of adding 4G data access and a faster processor — it downloads Web pages notably faster, by several seconds, than the 4S with decent 3G access,” Reynolds said.

“The screen retained a very, very sharp display,” he added. “It’s every bit as crisp and bright, and may even have a slight advantage in terms of [decreasing] glare.”

Reynolds also praised its longer screen, noting it allows another line of apps. The only major drawback, he said, is the phone’s Maps App.

The magazine’s complete report will be published next week.
