Cruz encouraged by ‘progress’ in contract talks with Giants

Victor Cruz has mostly let his play do the talking and hasn’t said much about his desire for a new contract with the Giants but lately he’s kicked up the rhetoric a bit. He said last week he would like to get a new deal sometime this season and on Monday he told ESPN that he’s encouraged he’s getting closer to making that happen.

“I was excited to hear this weekend that contract talks are moving in the right direction,’’ Cruz said. “I heard there was some progress on the structure.”

The Giants are reportedly about $2.5 million under the salary cap, so there is some room to get something done. Cruz maintains he wants to stay with the Giants and wants to retire with the Giants. He’s set to become a restricted free agent after the season and currently makes $540,000, the minimum for a player with three-years of NFL experience. At mid-season, he has 52 catches for 650 yards and seven touchdowns, all team highs. He is coming off his least-productive game of the season, as he was limited to two catches for 23 yards in the 29-24 victory over the Cowboys.
