Shoulder surgeries for Rangers’ Callahan, Hagelin

The Rangers announced yesterday captain Ryan Callahan and forward Carl Hagelin had the same surgery to repair a torn labrum in each of their left shoulders. The recovery time for that type of procedure is between three and six months, meaning both could be in jeopardy of missing training camp and the opening of next season.

It’s believed Callahan has been dealing with the ailment since he got in a fight with the Flyers’ Max Talbot on Jan. 29, the same fight that caused a partial shoulder separation and forced him to miss three games. He finished the season with 16 goals, 15 assists, and led all NHL forwards with 66 blocked shots.

For Hagelin, it seems his shoulder has been an issue for the past couple of years. The speedy Swedish winger is also a restricted free agent, meaning he will be looking for a new contract after coming off surgery.

Both surgeries were done by Dr. Andrew Feldman at the NYU Langone Medical Center’s Hospital for Joint Diseases in Manhattan.
