George RR Martin talks ‘Game of Thrones’ deaths

‘Game of Thrones” creator George RR Martin says he loved last Sunday’s violent episode, in which three major characters were killed on the HBO series.

“As a reader or as a viewer of television and film, I always like unexpected things and I always like the suspense to be real,” he said Wednesday night on “Conan,” talking about the episode entitled “The Rains of Castamere” — but known to “Game of Thrones” fans as “The Red Wedding.”

“I want my readers and I want my viewers to be afraid when my characters are in danger. I want them to be afraid to turn the next page because the next character may not survive it.”

But Martin said he does have some regrets, particularly about killing off main characters Robb Starke and Catelyn Starke .

“It’s one thing to kill these characters when they’re just people on paper, but when you actually meet the actors . . . and you know you’re making people unemployed, it does bring up a certain amount of guilt feelings,” he said.

Not to worry: Richard Madden (Robb), will co-star in Discovery’s new series, “Klondike,” while Michelle Fairley (Catelyn) is filming a TV movie.

The season finale of “GOT” airs Sunday night.
