Valerie Harper’s cancer battle to be focus of new documentary

Valerie Harper is working with NBC to document her battle with terminal brain cancer.

Harper and NBC News will team for an hour-long documentary, hosted by Meredith Vieira, in which Harper will tell her story about living with leptomeningial carcinomatosis, which is a cancer that has infiltrated the membrane surrounding her brain.

Harper, 73, was first diagnosed with the cancer — a recurrence of her 2009 lung cancer — in March. At the time, doctors gave her as little as three months to live.

She has since given NBC camera crews full access to her daily life, which includes her husband, Tony Cacciotti, and their daughter, Cristina.

The documentary doesn’t yet have a title or an airdate, but will be shown in prime time.

Vieira has wrapped her 11th and final season as the host of the syndicated version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”

She’ll be replaced by Cedric the Entertainer, who begins his “Millionaire” run Sept. 2 on Ch. 7.
