Ex-Jet Hudson dead at 70

Jim Hudson, who played safety on the Jets’ 1969 Super Bowl championship team, died Tuesday of traumatic dementia encephalopathy, according to the Austin American-Statesman. He was 70.

Hudson played for the Jets from 1965 to 1970. He made a key interception in Super Bowl III just before halftime.

In his collegiate career, Hudson played quarterback and defensive back for Texas and was a member of the Longhorns’ 1963 national championship team. His play in the 1965 Orange Bowl against Alabama — in which he threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to lead Texas to a 21-17 victory — drew the attention of Jets scouts who came to see Crimson Tide quarterback Joe Namath.

In 2012, Hudson was inducted into the University of Texas Men’s Hall of Honor.
