Mayor’s team mum on lavish transition spending

Mayor de Blasio’s office refuses to explain several lavish expenses incurred during his transition.

The mayor-in-waiting’s aides spent $601 for one night at The W Hotel in DC on Dec. 12 — the night before de Blasio met with President Obama and other mayors in the nation’s capital — and $1,142 for one night at The St. Regis, also in Washington, Dec. 16.

It’s not clear who stayed at The St. Regis, since de Blasio’s public schedule shows he was in New York on both Dec. 16 and 17.

The transition team’s other unexplained charges include nearly $2,000 for JetBlue tix and more than $3,000 for Amtrak.

Campaign Finance Board guidelines require that contributions raised by winning candidates after the election be “in furtherance of the candidate-elect’s transition and/or inauguration into office.”

But the mayor’s press office has refused to explain how the charges meet that requirement, despite touting “transparency.”
