Ex-Microsoft CEO Ballmer quits board after buying Clippers

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, is leaving the software giant’s board and severing his last official tie to the company he ran for 14 years.

Ballmer, who stepped down six months ago as CEO in favor of Satya Nadella, said he’s become “very busy” since the $2 billion purchase of the NBA team from ousted owner Don Sterling.

“Given my confidence and the multitude of new commitments I am taking on now, I think it would be impractical for me to continue to serve on the board, and it is best for me to move off,” he wrote in a “Dear Satya” letter posted Tuesday on the company’s website.

“The fall will be hectic between teaching a new class and the start of the NBA season so my departure from the board is effective immediately.”

“I bleed Microsoft — have for 34 years and I always will,” he added.

Ballmer — famous for his wild on-stage antics as CEO — is turning out to be just as impassioned about basketball as he was about the tech business.

The budding basketball mogul shouted and ran through the crowd at a rally on Monday to mark his ownership of the team.
