‘Shutter Island’ based-series coming to a TV near you

Paramount Pictures says it plans to turn its 2010 film “Shutter Island” into a TV series for HBO — with Martin Scorsese slated to direct the pilot.

It’s tentatively titled “Ashecliffe” and is described as a prequel to the movie, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio as a US Marshal investigating the disappearance of a convicted murderer who escapes from a hospital for the criminally insane.

According to deadline.com, “Ashecliffe” focuses on the hospital itself and how it was built in the early 20th century as a treatment center for the mentally ill.

Hmmm … almost sounds like Cinemax’s “The Knick,” another turn-of-the-century hospital drama.

Scorsese is working on a series about the music industry for HBO and directed the pilot for “Boardwalk Empire,” whose final season starts next month.
