Why Heidi Klum was almost kept out of her own Halloween party

It’s not Halloween in New York City without Heidi Klum’s legendary Halloween party. Now in its 16th year, the spooky shindig (held at Lavo and sponsored by GSN’s “Hellevator” and Svedka Vodka) is the high-water mark for crazy costumes, but as the 42-year-old model tells Hardeep Phull, things don’t always go as planned.

“I usually start Halloween weekend late and sleep in, because I know I’m going to be up until 5 or 6 a.m., at least. I’ve been working on my Halloween costume for months — it involves a lot of prosthetics and, this year, I’m going to start applying everything around noon. I’m not going to reveal what it is, but it’s more of a transformation than a costume!

“Sometimes, my costumes have almost been too successful. When I was a 95-year-old version of myself, I spent a lot of time getting the details right, down to the varicose veins and the eye lenses to make it look like I had cataracts. No one recognized me, and I almost had to tell everyone to let me into my own party!

“There have been some mishaps, too. One time I was a witch, and I wanted to fly into the room. I had a harness on, but I got stuck up there for a little while. And when I was nine months pregnant, I wanted to make sure my belly was well-protected, so I dressed up as a big apple.

“The problem with that was that I was so big, I couldn’t fit into a car, so I had to get a convertible at the last moment just so I could get to the party. I couldn’t drink water because my arms didn’t reach my face, I couldn’t even sit. That wasn’t so much fun — I didn’t fully think that one through!”
