First Super Mario iPhone game will hit app store in December

After the blockbuster release of Pokemon GO!, Nintendo announced Super Mario Run will be available for iOS devices starting on Dec. 15.

Following a free download, access to the full game on iPhone and iPad devices will cost users $9.99.

Users who want to stick to the free download can try limited elements of the game’s three modes.

In the single-player game, Mario moves forward automatically and users tap the screen to dodge obstacles, avoid enemies, gather coins and reach the end of each course.

Super Mario Run was originally announced during an Apple launch event in September.

It is expected to arrive on Android devices at a later date.

The game is one of Nintendo’s first forays into smartphone gaming. Two other mobile apps based on Nintendo games — including “Fire Emblem” and “Animal Crossing” — are expected to launch in early 2017.

Nintendo recently announced its latest gaming system, Switch, which combines a portable handheld device and a stationary dock.
