The call for free birth control in NYC is happening

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito wants to deliver free birth control to all women in the Big Apple.

Mark-Viverito is expected to announce her plan during her third State of the City address Thursday at the newly renovated Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

The Council has already allocated $800,000 for long-acting reversible contraceptives like intrauterine devices and will look to boost the fund so that all New York women can get protection, even if they don’t have proper insurance.

The Council speaker also plans to announce she’ll be pushing to reduce the inmate population at Rikers Island, strengthen tenant harassment laws, offer “culturally responsive education” and “comprehensive” sex education in schools, and protect undocumented immigrants in danger of deportation.
