Investor Nicolas Berggruen — who was known for years as the “homeless billionaire” because he didn’t own a house and crashed in five-star hotels across the world — continues to settle down.
Berggruen, who now owns homes in New York and Los Angeles, just spent more than $40 million for a sprawling LA mansion that once belonged to socialite Edith Mayer Goetz, according to the snoops at the Real Deal.
One of the richest men in the world, Berggruen, 55, is currently raising two year-old children as a single dad.
Located in Holmby Hills, his new spread measures a roomy 20,000 square feet and has 11 bedrooms. There’s also a screening room inside, where Goetz — the daughter of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cofounder Louis B. Mayer — would show movies to her friends before their release.
Goetz died in 1988 at the age of 82. The home’s most recent owner is Gary Wilson — former chairman of the board of Northwest Airlines, later absorbed by Delta — who bought it from her estate in 1990. Wilson listed a 2.2-acre parcel for $45 million in February.
In September 2016, however, Wilson listed the full property for $79 million. That included an adjacent 2.5-acre lot that he acquired after his 1990 purchase and then combined with Goetz’s land. He later split the listing in two to bring in prospective buyers who couldn’t afford the high price of the full shebang, the Real Deal notes.
This Georgian Revival-style pad dates back to the 1930s and was designed by architect Gordon Kaufmann.
