This money man has a serious debt to pay.
A West Village bookkeeper was arrested at the Holland Tunnel early Thursday morning when cops realized he owed close to $49,000 in EZ Pass tolls and fines, the Port Authority said.
Steven Salmon, 37, who works for Weichsel Beef Company on Washington Street, was headed towards Manhattan around 3:30 a.m. when he drove his Honda CRV straight through a marked “EZ Pass Only” lane without paying a toll, police said.
The Honda was known to Port Authority police as a “regular toll violator” so they pulled him over.
When Salmon failed to hand over an EZ Pass device, cops threw cuffs on him and soon realized they’d caught a real big fish — Salmon had 756 violations, totaling $48,578.00 in tolls and fees.
He was booked in Jersey City on a theft of service charge and given a summons for his most recent, and hopefully last, toll violation. His car was also impounded.
Salmon’s expected back in court on Aug. 3 and will likely have the opportunity to pay off the fines in the form of a payment plan.
While $48,578 may seem like a lot of money, Salmon’s far from breaking any PANY toll evader records, officials said.
Some toll evaders were known to owe more than $100,000 in unpaid fees.
Salmon was not at work today, according to an employee reached by The Post, and it’s unknown if the company will be retaining his bookkeeping services after this incident.
When reached by phone, Salmon had “no comment.”
