Alleged drunk driver nearly flips car outside Holland Tunnel

A boozy motorist crashed his car through a metal fence outside the Holland Tunnel on Sunday night, causing the vehicle to practically flip over, Port Authority police said.

Officers responding to a call of a motor vehicle crash at the tunnel’s exit at Varick and Canal streets discovered the wild scene, authorities said.

The red 2008 Honda Civic was found tipped over with its wheels on one side completely off the ground and still running with its keys in the ignition, according to cops.

The driver, Raymond Nicholas Nelson, 24, refused medical attention from emergency responders. When police questioned Nelson, they discovered that he reeked of alcohol, his speech was slurred and his eyes were watery, Port Authority police said.

He failed a Breathalyzer test by blowing a .145 — nearly twice the .08 legal limit, police said.

Nelson, of Baldwin, LI, was arrested at the scene on charges of DWI, reckless driving and driving on the sidewalk, authorities said.
