Protesters let de Blasio hear it about NYCHA at State of the City

It may have been in Brooklyn, but Mayor Bill de Blasio got a Bronx cheer from protesters holding “NYCHA is Freezing” signs as he walked into a theater Tuesday to deliver his State of the City address.

More than 50 demonstrators in support of public housing waved the signs and shouted as they greeted Hizzoner outside Kings Theater in Flatbush before his 7 p.m. speech.

“We’ve been fighting this battle for the last 10 years. It didn’t just start now.” said Vernell Robinson, 55, of Carlton Manor Houses in Far Rockaway.

“We want the people to know what state NYCHA is in. It’s not just freezing we’re living in deplorable conditions.”

Other protesters shouted: “What do we want? Heat and hot water! When do we want it? Now!”

A second group was advocating for better prison conditions while a third was supporting immigrants’ rights.

The mayor has been embroiled in a number of scandals involving the New York City Housing Authority — including the lead paint debacle and the lack of heating.
